California has passed a new social media law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, set to take effect in 2027. The law aims to protect children from "addictive feeds" on social media platforms, which are defined as algorithms that recommend or prioritize content based on user data. It bans sending notifications to minors between midnight and 6 a.m. without parental consent and restricts them from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the school year. Additionally, it mandates that minors’ accounts default to private settings. This legislation builds on previous laws aimed at preventing harm to minors from social media. Newsom emphasized that the law helps combat the harmful effects of social media addiction on children, such as isolation, anxiety, and excessive screen time.

If you dontt want your kid getting notifications at midnight, take their phone away! There’s so much tech available for parents to set limits like screen time apps, parental controls, etc. Why are we handing the job over to the government when parents could easily be doing this themselves?
